The Shadow - Father’s Day
The Snickers Bar
In a signature creative moment, the preacher used a Snickers bar to illustrate fatherhood:
Nuts: Dads can be a little goofy.
Caramel: Dads stick with you through thick and thin.
Nougat: Underneath the toughness is a heart of compassion.
Chocolate: God’s covering reminds us we are just a shadow of His perfect love.
This Father’s Day message explores the lasting influence fathers have on their families and how those legacies—both good and flawed—can point us toward deeper spiritual truths.
1. Play by the Rules, On and Off the Field
Discipline and integrity matter. Whether it’s sports, relationships, or faith, winning at life doesn’t come from shortcuts—it comes from living within God’s boundaries. The victories that count are those achieved with character.
2. Use the Power You’ve Been Given for Good
Dad’s love fast cars—and if they have a fast car—it’s not going to stay parked. Just like horsepower, potential means little if it stays parked. The Spirit of God within us isn’t meant to be idle. We’re called to live bold, active lives of faith—pouring our energy into others, using what we’ve been given to serve and build up.
3. Respect What You Carry
We’ve been entrusted with powerful tools: knowledge, influence, even our words. Like weapons or trained hands, these tools can build or destroy. Wisdom and restraint are part of what it means to lead well, especially in moments of pressure.
4. Embrace Your Imperfections Without Excusing Them
It’s no secret that fathers aren’t perfect. Rather than hide or excuse our flaws, we can be honest about them, let others learn from them, and allow God to continue shaping us through them.
5. Grow from the Examples of Others
Fathers are undoubtedly in a position of influence. Spiritual growth often comes through the influence of those who walk closely with God. Whether or not we had a strong earthly father, we can all learn from spiritual mentors who model faith, endurance, and love.
6. You’re a Shadow of Something Greater
Ultimately, every good trait we reflect—strength, compassion, guidance—is just a glimpse of our true Father in heaven. Our goal isn’t to be perfect, but to point our families toward the One who is.
Final Challenge
Here’s some encouragement: While earthly fathers may only be shadows of our true Father, they must still strive to reflect His character. Through grace, wisdom, and love, fathers can impact their families and communities in powerful ways.
